For this project, I created a propaganda-style poster inspired by historical inspirational propaganda. I began by tracing a photograph of myself in Adobe Illustrator using the Pen Tool. I converted my picture into simplified vector shapes, focusing on clean lines and flat colors to create a neat, graphic look. This connects to traditional propaganda posters, which rely on strong silhouettes and simplified forms to communicate messages quickly and effectively.
I limited my palette to five main colors and selected a compound color scheme. The dominant pink/coral tones contrast with mint green, which is a softened complementary color. The warm skin tone and brown hair support the coral side of the palette, keeping the composition cohesive. The color combination helps communicate positivity, growth, and femininity, reinforcing the message of transformation.
The gradient background creates a glowing halo effect around me to draw attention to the center. This makes my figure look important, like in traditional propaganda posters which aim to make figures look empowered or heroic. The eye moves from the bold headline "SPREAD YOUR WINGS" down to my portrait and finally to the butterfly logo on the shirt. I chose a bold, simple font so the words are easy to read and make a strong, confident statement.
The phrase "Spread Your Wings" functions as inspirational propaganda. It's not political, it's about self-growth and empowerment. The direct, commanding words are similar to traditional propaganda slogans and make the viewer feel motivated.
I incorporated my butterfly logo into the design by placing it on the shirt of the portrait. The butterfly symbolizes transformation and growth, which supports the message of the poster. This ties everything together as well as reinforces personal branding.
Overall, this poster uses simplified shapes, a limited color palette, and bold text to create a clear, convincing message. The composition attracts attention and uses propaganda techniques to inspire empowerment and personal growth.
