For this project, I created an autoscopy using my self-portrait along with multiple layered images to explore connection beyond the self. I wanted to create a more visually appealing picture by showing how I am connected to nature, the environment, and the world around me in a dreamlike way. I used a picture of me at the beach because it represents a place where I feel most like myself.
To emphasize my connection to nature, I added a flower crown to my hair and included ocean elements such as a dolphin in the water. I also incorporated butterflies, glowing stars, and a sandcastle to create a sense of environment and connection. These elements work together to represent different forms of connection, including nature, life, and the world beyond.
I used Photoshop and worked with multiple layers and selection tools to combine all of my images into one composition. I used the Quick Selection Tool to isolate subjects and then applied layer masks to remove their backgrounds and place them into my scene. I refined these masks using soft brushes to blend the edges and make the elements look natural within the environment. For example, I used soft brushing and masking to make the dolphin appear partially submerged in the water, and to help the stars blend smoothly into the sunset sky rather than look like they were just placed on top. I also adjusted opacity to create a cohesive, dreamy effect and to ensure that all elements matched the lighting and color of the original photo. Overall, this piece reflects a peaceful and visually expressive interpretation of connection, showing how I am surrounded by and connected to the natural and whimsical elements that shape my world.
