Abstract: The Art of Design

Upon watching the documentary "Abstract: The Art of Design", I learned how Platon uses portrait photography not just to capture faces, but to show emotion, vulnerability, and human connection. One image that stood out to me was the close-up black-and-white portrait of a person looking directly into the camera and crying, with a tear running down their face. The image feels extremely raw and almost uncomfortable to look at, because the emotion is so real and unfiltered. The framing forces you to focus only on the face, especially the eyes and the tear, which makes the feeling of sadness even more intense.

The vulnerability of the photo made me feel a sense of empathy, like I could understand what the person was going through without knowing their story. This connects directly to Platon’s idea of being a “bridge builder”, because the photo creates a connection between the subject and the viewer. It shows that emotions like pain and sadness are universal, no matter who you are.

This is an image where I visually express connection to another human being. I chose this picture because it feels genuine and unposed, which reflects real connection and emotion. The way we are hugging each other shows comfort, trust, and an emotional bond. The background is dark and the flash highlights us as the focus, emphasizing the importance of the relationship over the setting.

This image represents my connection to the world through friendship and human relationships. It captures a moment of happiness. I think it shows that connection doesn’t always have to be serious or emotional in a heavy way, it can also be expressed through love and friendship. This photo reflects how important those relationships are in shaping who we are and how we relate to others.
